Round Three - Horse Thief Mile

Post by Brakelate »

I heard the next series of Sttars is going to be held at Willow's Horse Thief Mile Circuit, I went alone last yet and had a blast. Practice on Saturday, with neat camping up on the hill, a antique / vintage / race swap eet on Saturday and then vintage classes racing on Sunday. They even had a band and entertainment and moto-games on Saturday night with fun skill games for all brands, makes and a local club's "bike nite" on Saturday. I sampled the events and cruised around, alone just checking out the scene last year, but hit the sack early prepping for my big race day on Sunday.

I keep thinking of what a great social gathering, hang out and general all around bike lover's good time it would be this year If you (The Kid) was in shape physically, mechanically and financially to do Sunday's race. Random thoughts of taking the RV up there Sat afternoon, walking the vintage swap meet and then later, having a few beers and just simply enjoying the company of other like-minded folks would be Sat night, then I could serve as spotter, chief mechanic and temporary fill in team coach for the weekend. That is, IF you could ride on Sunday.

Just a thought. Imagined it would be a total hoot having folks come and go and be there for support and cheer you on during the Sunday races. I always enjoyed the unique track. Plus, hot dogs or frozen Lasagna in a lawn chair overlooking the Antelope Valley, soaking in the stars and lack of starts on a perfectly clear night shared with friends and bike stories is always a real winner.

Anywhooo. Just thinking out loud.

Unfortunately, there are many things that are keeping me from doing Round 3.

I have not yet got the bike tested and ran with the "fixed" brake fluid reservoir. I have a backup MC that I am going to test out as well in case the reservoir fix doesn't hold. I actually took all week next week off so I can run Adams on Monday and Wednesday to get ready to race Stateline Fri-Sunday.

I am also low on funds, due to having to possibly get new rubber for stateline.

The last thing that is a bummer, is that Stateline actually scheduled their event during the original date for Round 3, which would have matched up with all of the Vintage stuff like previous years. But since STTARS is awesome, they moved their date one week forward so that racers that wanted to, could do both events. This then meant that there would be no Saturday practice (track already rented) and there would be no other vintage bike event going on at the same time.

I had thought about going up to hang out and doing a street ride, but now that I am planning on having 2 bike test days next week, I need to fully prep the race bike on Sunday. I am riding my bicycle in the Tour de Cure in San Diego on Saturday so I am limited on time to prep.

Who knows though...I might get stir crazy Saturday, fully prep the bike, charging up to Willow and just racing it without testing the bike, nor myself, as I have yet to be back on the track post-injury. The main thing holding me back is finances. I mean it's only $80 bucks to race, but it will cost me $140 in gas. After adding costs for food and random stuff, I will be right around the price for a rear tire, which I will likely need for Stateline.

Yea...just converted Sunday to another otay mountain truck trail ride. A co worker just got a new model BMW 1200 GS that he wants to get dirty. My drz buddy and i were thinking abut putting the knobbies this time to see the difference between each style of tire, but practicing on the road tire will probably benefit me more for the upcoming race.

You guys are worried about putting on knobbies? How does this make the new GS rider feel?

He probably doesn't like it. We are toying with the idea so that we can explore some of the side trails. We also wanted to be able to rail around and leave the GS rider in the dust and roost. This particular guy is a director of a department, where as we are just lowly engineers. The director isn't particularly liked much, so having a big advantage over him machine wise would be enjoyable.
